What Type of Psychological Assessment Does my Child Need?

Purpose:
To better understand strength and growth areas in a child’s problem-solving ability (cognitive/intellectual ability) and academic skills in order to guide appropriate intervention/supports at home and at school
To provide a general screening of social and emotional factors that can impact academic performance or school functioning (e.g., anxiety, mood, life stressors, school avoidance, disruptive behaviour, attitude regarding school/learning)
To provide input regarding the potential need for further assessments such as Clinical Diagnostic Assessment, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment, Speech & Language Assessment, Occupational Therapy Assessment, Medical Consultation
Potential Clinical Diagnoses:
Learning Disability
Intellectual Disability
ADHD
What’s Involved:
3 Home Visit Testing Sessions (approximately 3 hours of testing per session)
Questionnaires Completed by Parents, Teacher and Child/Teen

Purpose:
To better understand strength and growth areas in a child’s ability to regulate attention, focus and impulses in order to guide appropriate intervention/supports at home and at school
To provide a general screening of social and emotional factors that can impact attention, focus, and impulse control (e.g., anxiety, mood, life stressors, cognitive/intellectual ability)
To provide input regarding the potential need for further assessments such as Clinical Diagnostic Assessment, Psychoeducational Assessment, Medical Consultation
Potential Clinical Diagnosis:
ADHD
What’s Involved:
1-2 Home Visit Testing Sessions (approximately 2 hours of testing per session)
Questionnaires Completed by Parents, Teacher and Child/Teen

Purpose:
To better understand strength and growth areas in a child’s problem-solving ability (cognitive/intellectual ability)
To guide appropriate school/academic placement decisions (e.g., private school entry requirements, access to gifted or enriched academic programs)
What’s Involved:
1 Home Visit Testing Session (approximately 2 hours of testing)
Potential Clinical Diagnosis:
No formal clinical diagnosis is provided in this type of assessment
The term “Gifted” is not a formal clinical diagnosis. It is a label that can only be formally provided within the child’s school board system
If relevant, clear recommendations would be made for the child’s school to formally consider providing the “Gifted” identification

Purpose:
To better understand strength and growth areas in a child or teen’s social and emotional wellbeing in order to guide appropriate intervention/supports at home and at school
To better understand a child’s developing personality dynamics (e.g., view of themselves, others and the world around them), interpersonal style, coping skills/defense mechanisms, and/or unconscious influences on behaviour, to provide in-depth therapy or treatment recommendations
This type of assessment can be done on its own OR in conjunction with any other type of assessment, if needed
To provide input regarding the potential need for further assessments such as Psychoeducational Assessment, ADHD Assessment, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment, Medical Consultation
What’s Involved:
1-2 Home Visit Testing Sessions (approximately 1.5-2 hours of testing per session)
Questionnaires Completed by Parents, Teacher and Child/Teen
Clinical Interview
Potential Clinical Diagnoses:
Mood Disorders (e.g., depression)
Anxiety Disorders (e.g., social anxiety, generalized anxiety)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Developing personality traits in youth (e.g., Borderline Personality Disorder)

Purpose:
To better understand strength and growth areas in a child or teen’s social and emotional wellbeing and how these factors may interact with a child’s reasoning ability, academic skills and/or attention regulation in order to guide appropriate intervention/supports at home and at school
Comprehensive Psychological Assessments involve combining the Clinical/Diagnostic Assessment plus one other type of assessment (i.e., Psychoeducational Assessment, ADHD Assessment, Gifted/Cognitive Assessment)

Assessment Process

Virtual meeting with child and parents
Review background information
Determine scope of assessment
Review in-home assessment space

In-home administration of assessment measures with child/youth
Private space needed
1-4 separate testing sessions for about 2-3 hours per session (depending on scope of assessment)

Virtual meetings with parents and child/youth
Explain and discuss assessment results, impressions, diagnosis (if relevant) and recommendations

Receive a comprehensive psychological assessment report summarizing all relevant background, assessment results, impressions, diagnoses (if relevant) and recommendations
Report is also accompanied by a one-page 'executive summary'
